The Maya School is an educational institution that has embraced the social responsibility issue and has made it part of its strategy.  The School teaches students to respect and love people, but more than just going by the book it gives them the opportunity to get “hands on” experience. Most of the time the activities are organized by the Seniors, Honor Society and Student Government; everybody has the chance to get involved.

These are some of the community services available:

SANTA MARIA DEL MAR PARISH

At this community, Father Abel, which is the priest in charge, helps young people that are struggling with drug problems or have belonged to a gang.  Clothes and food drives are held throughout the year to take some donations to this place.  They have also collected money from activities such as bingos or bake sales to pay two or three scholarships for children attending Father Abel’s school.

GUANAQUIN (EL DIARIO DE HOY)

All our 10th and 11th grade students collect samples of a weekly educational magazine that comes in a national newspaper. This takes place over a period of one year.  At the end, they bind the samples together and illustrate the front covers.  These books are used as educational material in rural areas of our country.

LIBRAS DE AMOR

They help children with nutritional problems and families in need of food.  Our students, either go to their offices on Saturdays and help pack food for these people, or sell promotional items at local shopping centers and supermarkets.

HEART CARE INTERNATIONAL

This foundations carries out a two week program of heart surgeries for Salvadoran children.  Our Junior students have the opportunity to serve as interpreters between the American doctors and the families of these children.  Sometimes they even enter the operations room to enable communication between national and international doctors.

TELETON

Every year in El Salvador, Teleton foundation has an activity to raise funds to build hospitals and help handicapped people.  Every student takes home a list and collects money from their families and friends. We organize jeans days and bake sales, at school, to raise more funds for this activity.
