HISTORY

Colegio Maya was founded in 1994 by a group of experienced teachers committed to provide the best conditions for child development and learning. It was agreed at that time that a friendly, intimate setting should be established, in which individual progress could be closely monitored, difficulties readily identified and where no child would be overlooked.

The school offers a fully bilingual English-Spanish college preparatory program. Enrollment is approximately 420 students. Average class size is 18 students. Textbooks and teaching materials from the U.S. and locally have been carefully selected. Our teaching staff is highly qualified and fully bilingual. Our strengths include: the personal attention given to each student, a cooperative learning methodology, rigorous intellectual expectations, a strong moral fiber and an innovative conflict resolution method. All of these elements lead students towards excellence and a sense of well-being. Students, parents, teachers and administrators work as a team to achieve these goals.

Colegio Maya was accepted as an active member of the Association of American Schools in Central America (AASCA) beginning in the 2007-2008 school year. AASCA is a group of twenty schools in the region that support academic, artistic, athletic and cultural interaction between the students, teachers and administrators of its members. The desire of AASCA is to promote better understanding among these educational communities. Regional events include sporting tournaments, leadership conferences, Knowledge Bowl, music and drama festivals for students. Teachers and administrators also benefit from professional networking, workshops and conferences.
